
From April 1st to April 3rd, 2025, the idyllic island of Porquerolles in France hosted the 6th General Assembly of the REMEDIES project, under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters.” The three-day gathering brought together project partners, local stakeholders, and international experts, creating a space for impactful exchange, strategic coordination, and hands-on environmental action.
5th REMEDIES Cluster Meeting & Solutions Forum
On April 1st, 2025, Porquerolles Island hosted the 5th REMEDIES Cluster Meeting, organized by SMILO, under the theme “Uniting for a Plastic-Free Mediterranean”. The event brought together REMEDIES partners and key stakeholders from institutions, civil society, and research to discuss strategies at EU, regional, and local levels to combat plastic pollution.
Inspiring voices and shared solutions
Opening remarks by Philippe Bernardi (Porquerolles Island Committee) and Maxime Prodomides (SMILO) emphasized the island’s proactive role in sustainable waste management.
Claudiane de Corbiac (Ifremer) presented the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters, highlighting funding and innovation opportunities.
Designer and REMEDIES ambassador Antoine Boudin delivered a compelling keynote on the urgency of moving beyond plastic and showcased eco-alternatives made from Provence reed.
Regional action and local impact
Panel discussions featured representatives from Ifremer, ADEME, and the National Institute of Chemistry, who shared large-scale strategies and REMEDIES insights.
Local actors like MerTerre, Ecoscience Provence, Explore&Preserve, and the Port-Cros National Park presented concrete actions on Porquerolles and across southern France — from plastic-free charters to awareness campaigns and sustainable branding.
A stronger mediterranean network
This Cluster Event reinforced cross-sector collaboration and showcased scalable solutions to plastic pollution.
Sylvain Petit (SMILO) closed the meeting by calling for continued momentum and collective action toward a cleaner Mediterranean.
In the afternoon, the Solutions Forum presented REMEDIES and local innovations and explored complementary technologies and policy pathways for tackling plastic marine litter.

REMEDIES General Assembly
The 6th General Assembly followed with updates from all Work Packages (WP1–WP7), presenting progress, challenges, and key performance indicators. Dedicated sessions focused on Gender dimension in research and development of solutions, Commercialization, exploitation, and long-term vision, and Citizen Science strategies. Workshops and focus groups offered space for co-creation and future planning, ensuring alignment across technical and social innovation components of the project.
Clean-Up & Monitoring at La Courtade Beach
The final day was dedicated to fieldwork and community engagement. In collaboration with local partners Explore & Preserve and SMILO, participants took part in a Clean-Up and Monitoring Session at Plage La Courtade. The session included litter categorization activities, strengthening citizen participation and showcasing the App and methodologies developed under REMEDIES.
The Porquerolles gathering was a vibrant reminder of what can be achieved when science, community, and innovation come together.
