On October 15, experts and stakeholders will convene at the Centre Léo Lagrange on Îles du Frioul to address the pressing issue of plastic waste management on small islands, in view of the SMILO Meet-up. Co-organized by the REMEDIES project, this workshop, will focus on the unique challenges faced by islands of less than 150 km² globally. Discussions will cover waste reduction at source, efficient collection, recycling, and recovery strategies.
Vesna Kuralt from the National Institute of Chemistry Slovenia and Annamaria Vujanović from the University of Maribor will share insights into innovative approaches to managing plastic waste on small-scale islands. Highlighting their experiences, they will emphasize the critical need for tailored solutions that respect the limitations and environmental sensitivities of small island communities. This session aims to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among island stakeholders, fostering new strategies to address plastic pollution in these unique environments.
By spotlighting innovative solutions and providing a platform for dialogue, the workshop aligns with REMEDIES’ mission to implement effective, community-driven approaches to tackle plastic waste, ultimately contributing to a healthier marine ecosystem.
