Uniting for Cleaner Rivers: ETMI and Milieukontakt Albania Anti-Litter Campaign in Albania

By March 19, 2025March 26th, 2025News

The REMEDIES Anti-Litter Campaign in Albania is led by ETMI, the Demo Site Leader for Durres-Tirana, in collaboration with Milieukontakt Albania. This campaign, starting in April 2025 and will be concluded in Sept 2025, focuses on reducing plastic pollution in rivers, educating local communities, and promoting innovative solutions to protect freshwater ecosystems.

Through a series of targeted actions, including river clean-ups, monitoring activities, educational sessions, and technology showcases, the campaign will actively engage stakeholders in Albania’s river regions to adopt sustainable practices and support circular economy solutions.

This initiative aligns with the broader REMEDIES mission to:

✅ Conduct large-scale river clean-ups and raise awareness in demo site regions.

✅ Introduce zero-waste plastic solutions and new technologies.

✅ Educate local communities and provide guidelines for environmental activists, researchers, and advocates.

✅ Connect with other environmental campaigns and initiatives.

✅ Promote REMEDIES innovations as future market solutions.

By engaging key stakeholders and local communities, the campaign will contribute to the real-world implementation of plastic waste management strategies and support sustainable solutions at scale.

Showcasing River Clean-Up Results

The campaign will highlight the impact of multiple river clean-ups carried out in the Durres-Tirana region, demonstrating the importance of community-driven action in preserving freshwater and marine ecosystems. These efforts will provide insights into the sources and types of waste collected, reinforcing the need for stronger waste reduction and prevention strategies.

As part of the #20TonnesChallenge, the campaign aims to gather 20 tonnes of plastic litter from the clean-ups, showcasing the impact achieved through collective efforts and strengthening advocacy for enhanced waste management policies.

REMEDIES Innovations Presentation: River Cleaning System

As part of the campaign, the REMEDIES innovation that will be showcased is the River Cleaning System, a groundbreaking technology designed to:

✔ Prevent plastic pollution from entering seas and oceans.

✔ Continuously collect and remove floating plastic waste from rivers.

✔ Operate autonomously using renewable energy, without disrupting river ecosystems.

This innovative solution plays a crucial role in intercepting plastic waste at its source, reducing the amount of debris reaching coastal and marine environments.

PLASTIC FANTASTIC Webinar on Plastic Identification

A key feature of this campaign is the PLASTIC FANTASTIC Webinar, a collaboration between ETMI, University of Maribor (UM), Venice Lagoon Plastic Free (VLPF), and Impact Hub Athens (IHA).

The webinar brings together leading plastics and microplastics experts to discuss:

🔹 Plastic identification methods – How to differentiate plastics and assess their recyclability.

🔹 Recycling challenges – The limitations of plastic waste processing and how to improve waste management.

🔹 Sustainable alternatives – How individuals, businesses, and policymakers can contribute to a zero-waste future.

🔹 Current state of the Demo Site in Albania – ETMI presents the latest developments, challenges, and strategies being implemented at the Durres-Tirana Demo Site as part of the REMEDIES project.

Through case studies, interactive discussions, and expert insights, this webinar equips participants with practical knowledge on tackling plastic pollution and shaping sustainable waste management solutions.
