Clean-Up at Selho River: A Community Effort for Sustainability

By September 25, 2024News

On July 29, 2024, an inspiring clean-up event took place along the Selho River in Guimarães, Portugal. As part of the #CleanUP4Guimarães project, supported by the REMEDIES program, the clean-up was a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Guimarães and the Landscape Laboratory. This initiative once again showcased the power of community action in addressing environmental challenges.

The event saw 13 dedicated volunteers working tirelessly to clean an area covering 138 meters in length and 23 meters in width along the riverbank. Their efforts resulted in the collection of 170 kg of plastic waste and an additional 233 kg of other trash, including textiles and non-biodegradable materials.

This clean-up effort not only cleared a significant amount of waste from the river but also raised awareness about the importance of preserving our natural ecosystems. By removing pollutants from the Selho River, the volunteers helped protect local wildlife and improve the health of the surrounding environment.

Such actions emphasize the role that local communities can play in achieving broader sustainability goals. As part of the REMEDIES program’s mission to combat plastic pollution and support the 20 Tonnes Challenge, this clean-up marks a critical step toward safeguarding our rivers and oceans.
