Senior researcher in the Marine & Freshwater Research Centre of the Atlantic Technological University

João is a marine researcher working in the fields of marine litter, microplastic pollution and ocean literacy since 2008. He has over 40 publications on the sources, pathways, impacts and fate of microplastics, including methodologies to assess them. He has been part of important European projects in this field, and has established collaborations with many European, Asian and South American countries. He is an invited editor in the Journal of Regional Studies in Marine Science since 2023, and has co-edited special issues on microplastics in Marine Pollution Bulletin, and Frontiers on Marine Science. His research interests relate to diverse aspects of plastic pollution, from technical scientific to socio-economic challenges, that explore the three dimensions of sustainable development (social, economic and environmental).

What made you support the vision of REMEDIES?
Initiatives and projects such as REMEDIES are essential to assess plastic pollution and to protect our oceans and waters. Data collection and monitoring will provide the basis to have reliable information to support decision-making processes. However, with more than 20 years of data collected in Europe, it is important to focus on technological and innovative solutions that can minimise and prevent pollution of aquatic systems.
