By May 29, 2025July 9th, 2025News

The REMEDIES program has launched a series of impactful Open Days across the Mediterranean. These events demonstrate innovations and engage local communities in the fight against plastic marine litter. Open Days are hosted at the programs Demo Sites and Associate Regions, to showcase the project’s progress and invite citizens, stakeholders, and institutions to take part in hands-on environmental action.

1st Open Day – Saïdia, Morocco
Hosted by the University of Mohammed Premier (MOH), the Saïdia Demo Site Open Day unfolded over a 3-day event from November 28–30, 2023, in Oujda. It included the 3rd REMEDIES General Assembly, a high-level Cluster Meeting, and a Monitoring Workshop. Participants discussed policy, presented marine litter detection technologies such as MOH’s Aerial Drone & AI, and held a large-scale Beach Clean-up and Monitoring Campaign, collecting over 360 kg of litter.

Held during the Sea Star Festival in May 2024, this Open Day combined sustainability with creativity. Over 40 participants joined workshops on zero-waste seaweed cosmetic coatings organized by NIC and EXIT. More than 2,000 handmade shampoo balls were distributed to promote alternatives to single-use plastic packaging. As part of the festival, a coastal clean-up was also carried out to raise awareness about plastic pollution among festival-goers.
