5th International Workshop in Venice: Showcasing Innovation for Marine Litter Monitoring and Blue Circular Economy

On June 1, 2025, the Lighthouse Partner of the REMEDIES program, Venice Lagoon Plastic Free (VLPF), will host the 5th International Workshop on Marine Litter Monitoring, Removal, and Blue Circular Economy in Venice, Italy, at the iconic Torre di Porta Nuova during the International Boat Show.

This is a partner event in view of the EU Green Week, co-roganised by Venice Lagoon Plastic Free, REMEDIES, SeaClear2.0, I.S.D.I. GROUP, and Salone Nautico Venezia, with contributions of local authorities, and sustainability-focused innovation projects.

Several key REMEDIES partners will be among the featured speakers:

  • M.C. Cocca from CNR, presenting cutting-edge research on microplastics release detection in textile washing processes.
  • Andrea Camedda CReS – Centro di Recupero del Sinis : Interaction between Sea turtles and Macroplastics
  • N. Rubini from River Cleaning, sharing impactful insights on river clean-up actions in Tirana, Albania through REMEDIES-supported activities.

The agenda includes three parts:

  1. Marine Litter Monitoring and Assessment – presenting technologies, field data, and methodologies for detecting macro and microplastics.
  2. Demonstrations of Clean-up Solutions – featuring innovations and collaborative approaches.
  3. Blue Circular Economy Innovations – showcasing sustainable business models, material recovery, and policy pathways.

Highlights include:

  • The “Ghost Boat” programme in Venice
  • Circular applications using blue crab chitin
  • Case studies from Italy, Croatia, the UK, and beyond
  • Success stories of women in the blue economy
