By December 12, 2024December 13th, 2024News

One of the winners of the REMEDIES Open Call 2, the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality in Turkey, with the project Unite for Plastic-Free Coasts! (Up-FreeCoasts) aims to create a plastic-conscious community along the Mediterranean coast. The “Up-FreeCoasts” project will implement a zero-waste approach with closed-loop plastic recycling. Actions include installing a smart reverse vending machine in a municipal cafe, setting up water fountains along the coastal line, and training 1200 youngsters about plastic recycling and composting techniques at the MERCAN Environment and Climate Science Center. Additionally, cleanup activities will be conducted in various coastal and lakeside areas in Mersin.

Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environmental Science Center Enhances Environmental and Scientific Awareness

The Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environmental Science Center, operating under the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality’s Climate Change and Zero Waste Department, continues to actively raise public awareness about climate change and environmental issues. As Turkey’s first and only science center focusing on climate and environmental themes, Mercan has welcomed over 100,000 visitors since its establishment in 2023.

A Center for Scientific Exploration and Environmental Education

The center features 120 interactive experiment stations, a 120-person capacity planetarium, and an observatory equipped with advanced telescopes, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about science and environmental issues. Children, in particular, participate in various workshops such as Robotics and Coding, Climate and Environment, Astronomy, and Marine Biology, fostering their scientific curiosity while instilling environmental responsibility.

Within the Scope of REMEDIES

As part of the REMEDIES project, the science center plays a significant role in reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices. The project provides training for children aged 6-18 on waste segregation, recycling, and the zero-waste philosophy. Additionally, municipal initiatives such as the installation of smart waste vending machines and plastic collection bins along coastal areas are integrated with the center’s activities. These efforts align with the objectives of REMEDIES to minimize plastic pollution and encourage innovative recycling methods. As part of this initiative, Mayor Vahap SEÇER of Mersin Metropolitan Municipality visited the Mercan Science Center. During his visit, Mayor SEÇER highlighted the center’s role as a cornerstone in Mersin’s efforts to create a scientifically informed and environmentally conscious society. He also participated in an activity with children at the plastic waste collection station.
