REMEDIES began as one of the first projects selected under the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters,” launching a Horizon Europe innovation programme focused on a specific but urgent challenge: (micro)plastic pollution. Rooted in science, circularity, and community engagement, REMEDIES developed innovative solutions to monitor, collect, prevent, and valorise plastic litter while mobilising citizens and regions through participatory methodologies, citizen science, and two open calls supporting associate regions in building zero-waste supply chains. We are continuing with upscale and replication of our Mission!
Let’s Restore our Oceans and Waters by 2030
REMEDIES 5.0 builds on this foundation and expands the mission. Where the original REMEDIES centered on plastic litter, REMEDIES 5.0 broadens the scope to tackle the full spectrum of challenges facing Europe’s waterfronts — pollution, ecosystem degradation, the linear blue economy, and the disconnect between communities and their waters. It scales the same core principles science-driven innovation, circularity, and deep community co-creation into an integrated portfolio of over 20 solutions, demonstrated across 13 waterfront cities and ports throughout Europe.
In short: REMEDIES proved that citizens, science, and innovation can come together to fight plastic pollution. REMEDIES 5.0 takes that same collaborative spirit and applies it to the broader restoration of our oceans, rivers, and coasts turning a successful pilot mission into a pan-European engine for lasting change.
REMEDIES 5.0 – Integrated and People-Centred Waterfront Restoration for a Resilient European Blue Economy
Following the success of the original REMEDIES project, the project coordinator National Institute of Chemistry (Kemijski inštitut), from Slovenia, in cooperation with over 50 pan-European partner organizations from 15 countries, has launched the ambitious innovation action project, “REMEDIES 5.0 – Integrated and People-Centred Waterfront Restoration for a Resilient European Blue Economy”.

The REMEDIES 5.0 consortium is a powerful, transdisciplinary partnership of 52 partners from 15 countries, strategically designed to deliver on the project’s ambitious objectives. It forms a complete quadruple helix innovation ecosystem, uniting the key actors – science, industry, public authorities, and civil society – needed to move from problem identification to scaled-up, pan-European impact.
Beyond smart: a human-centred vision
REMEDIES 5.0 is a transformation in action. At its core lies a powerful engine designed to turn degraded waterfronts into thriving, healthy ecosystems — one built not just on technology, but on people.
While smart cities and ports often focus on optimizing infrastructure, REMEDIES 5.0 goes a step further, embracing the principles of Society 5.0: a vision in which technology serves people, not the other way around. Here, the true endpoint is not efficiency alone,
but human well-being addressing fundamental needs like safety, fairness, and quality of life.
This philosophy shapes our overarching objective: to empower and accelerate the transition of European waterfront cities and ports towards climate-neutrality, resilience, and ecological health, delivering measurable progress towards the goals of the Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters.”

Overall concept of REMEDIES 5.0. A people-centred methodology incorporating principles of Smart Society 5.0, with a portfolio of ≥20 innovative solutions.
We will achieve this by demonstrating a comprehensive, integrated portfolio of over 20 innovative solutions across 13 demonstration sites 9 waterfront cities and 6 ports spanning all four sea basins, moving these solutions from pilot to operational validation.
