Transferable actions for ocean and waters, up-scaling solutions and strengthening the role of waterfront cities and ports
Date: 7 October 2026 | Location: Ljubljana, Slovenia
On 7 October 2026, the REMEDIES project held its 10th Cluster Meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia, bringing together more than 50 participants in person and connecting with a wider online audience. The livestream recording has already attracted more than 80 views.
Held as part of the REMEDIES Final Conference programme, the meeting focused on “REMEDIES for ocean and waters: Transferable actions in building Society 5.0”, with particular attention to what comes after successful demonstration: how solutions can be transferred, replicated and scaled, and how cities, ports and other local actors can help ensure their long-term uptake. The event was also streamed live on YouTube, extending the discussion beyond those attending in Ljubljana.
From Ljubljana to a wider Mission Ocean community
The afternoon began with an informal lunch on the Ljubljanica River, creating space for participants and partners to connect before the formal programme began.
The 10th Cluster Meeting then opened with welcome speeches by Vesna Kuralt, Renata Zamida and Dr. Uroš Novak, followed by an introductory framework from Tit Neubauer. The opening set the scene for a discussion centred on the next stage of the European Mission to Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030, and on how knowledge and solutions developed through Mission Ocean projects can move towards wider application.
Guido Sacchetto from the European Commission and EU Mission Ocean and Waters presented the second stage of the Mission Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030, providing a broader policy and strategic context for the transition from demonstration towards lasting impact.
From solutions to up-scaling and replication
A central part of the meeting focused directly on the challenge of taking successful solutions beyond their original demonstration environments.
Lina Silveira addressed the up-scaling and replication of REMEDIES solutions, highlighting the importance of creating pathways through which innovations can be adopted in new territories and contexts.
This question was then explored in greater depth through the roundtable “Mission Ocean Lighthouses: How to Guide the Future Up-scaling and replication.” The discussion brought together coordinators from five Mission Ocean lighthouse projects: INSPIRE, PHAROS, ISLA BONITA, REMEDIES and iMERMAID.
Moderated by Tit Neubauer, the roundtable featured Dr. Ana Catarino, Dr. Gordon Dalton, Dr. Uroš Novak and Dr. Rodrigo Sedano. Bringing together perspectives from across different Mission Ocean lighthouse initiatives, the session created a space to consider how projects can learn from one another and strengthen pathways for the wider uptake of solutions.
The discussion reflected a key transition for the Mission Ocean community: moving from proving that innovative approaches can work to creating the conditions that allow them to be adopted, adapted and sustained in different places.
Waterfront cities and ports as guardians of the solutions
The final major discussion of the Cluster Meeting turned towards the actors that can play a decisive role in what happens after projects conclude: waterfront cities and ports.
The roundtable “What Happens Next: Waterfront Cities and Ports as Guardians of the Mission Solutions” explored the role of local and regional actors in carrying solutions forward and embedding them within the places where they can generate lasting impact.
Moderated by Anamarija Lukenda, the discussion brought together Elisabetta Balzi, Tomaž Lanišek, Gotelenne Piaton and Franka Cepak, representing perspectives from European policy, cities, marine and maritime organisations and the Port of Koper.
By placing cities and ports at the centre of the conversation, the session connected innovation with the practical realities of implementation. These actors are positioned close to the communities, infrastructure, economic activities and environmental challenges where Mission Ocean solutions ultimately need to deliver results.
Continuing the Mission beyond individual projects
The 10th REMEDIES Cluster Meeting provided a space for the Mission Ocean community to look beyond individual project outputs and towards the conditions for continuity, transfer and wider uptake.
The combination of European policy perspectives, lighthouse project experience and the voices of waterfront cities and ports reinforced the importance of collaboration across projects and territories. It also highlighted the need to connect innovation with the actors who can help embed solutions in local systems and support their continued development.
The meeting concluded with final remarks before participants continued the exchange during the evening partners’ networking event and dinner in Ljubljana.
As REMEDIES moves into its next chapter through REMEDIES 5.0, the 10th Cluster Meeting marked an important moment to reflect not only on what has been developed, but on how these solutions can continue to travel, evolve and create impact across Europe’s oceans, seas and waters.
