Dimitris Kokkinakis from Impact Hub Athens, as partner of the REMEDIES project, showcased Nautiloc, an innovative GPS-enabled buoy developed by MCG that helps track the movement of plastic litter in rivers and seas.
Replicating the behaviour of common plastic debris, the buoys are deployed across Northern Greece and the Aegean, sending location data every 12 hours for up to five years. The collected evidence already reveals how winds, currents and even salinity differences shape the journey of marine litter, often turning the Cyclades into a “net” that traps pollutants travelling from the Black Sea, Turkey and the Balkans.
This groundbreaking research has been featured on ERT3’s show Perimetros, highlighting how over 200 GPS buoys helped scientists map litter pathways: from Mykonos to Israel, from Andros to Libya, and from Chios back to the Cyclades. The results underline a crucial fact: plastic pollution is a transnational challenge that requires coordinated Mediterranean action.
