A Joint Effort by ETMI and Milieukontakt Albania Under the REMEDIES Anti-Litter Campaign
The REMEDIES Anti-Litter Campaign in Albania, led by the Environmental and Territorial Management Institute (ETMI), the Demo Site Leader for Durrës–Tirana, in collaboration with Milieukontakt Albania, continued its impactful actions this autumn with two hands-on activities at Hamallaj Beach, Ishmi Basin, under the umbrella of the REMEDIES Anti-Litter Campaign in Albania.
These activities contribute to wider efforts to protect rivers, coasts and marine ecosystems through citizen science, youth engagement, and field-based environmental monitoring.
Beach Clean-Up & Litter Monitoring Activities at Hamallaj Beach
On 16 November 2025, at Hamallaj Beach, ETMI and Milieukontakt Albania carried out two complementary activities under the RiverClean and REMEDIES projects: a beach clean-up and the seasonal Autumn 2025 beach litter monitoring. Both actions involved representatives from the two organisations as well as young participants from the September Summer School in Durrës, who had previously been trained in J-LIST coding and the beach litter monitoring protocol.
Beach Clean-Up Results
-
Total litter collected: 251 kg
-
Plastic waste: 157 kg
-
Other waste: 94 kg
-
Participants: 13
Beach Litter Monitoring Results
-
689 items collected and categorised
-
32.29 kg total weight
-
22.61 kg plastic
-
9.68 kg other materials
Both datasets were reported through the REMEDIES App, reinforcing the role of citizen science and youth engagement in environmental monitoring.
These actions form part of the Cleaner Rivers – Cleaner Seas (RiverClean) project, implemented by Milieukontakt Albania (member of the Milieukontakt International Network) and ETMI, funded by the European Union in Albania, and contribute directly to the objectives of the REMEDIES Project to reduce marine litter and support ecosystem protection.
World Rivers Day Youth Engagement Activity
On Day 3 of the Summer School “Blu pa Plastik”, implemented under the RiverClean Project and funded by the European Union in Albania, participants visited the Ishëm River estuary.
Together with AMBU and EU4Rivers, they:
-
joined a coastal clean-up,
-
celebrated World Rivers Day, and
-
raised awareness about the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems.
