Nautiloc

Partner(s)/Owner(s): MCGREECE

Brief Description:

Nautiloc is a buoy with a gps device embodied. This technology is created to track items, devices, and vehicles in a marine environment or in the land. It consists of a plastic (or wooden) part, which is the buoy and the gps device within it. This device is important for several reasons like safety, security, and well-being of people and their estate. It helps to Prevent Loss, as it allows owners to monitor a person’s or an item’s location in real-time. By Monitoring Health during Activity, it is beneficial for one’s health, because these devices have a built-in panic button, which can help owners monitor physical health of those who carry the gps on, by tracking their movements.

Problem:
The fight against plastic pollution in our waterways faces significant obstacles:
The movement of plastic debris in rivers and oceans is a complex dance, influenced by currents, wind, and tides. This unpredictable journey makes it incredibly difficult to track and predict where plastic waste will end up, hindering effective cleanup efforts.
Identifying where this plastic accumulates – those “hotspots” of pollution – is crucial for targeted waste management strategies. However, current methods for pinpointing these areas often lack the precision needed to effectively guide interventions.
Furthermore, we are hampered by a lack of comprehensive data. Limited information on the types and quantities of plastic pollution, as well as its movement patterns, hinders in-depth research and the development of informed policies to tackle this growing problem.
Finally, raising public awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility among all stakeholders – from individuals to industries – remains a crucial challenge in the fight against plastic pollution. Without widespread engagement and collaborative action, efforts to address this issue will be limited.

Solution:
Nautiloc is an innovative buoy-based GPS tracking system that monitors plastic litter movement in seas and rivers, helping to detect plastic hotspots and understand dispersion. REMEDIES utilizes buoys replicating common plastic litter, deployed in marine environments and rivers across Northern Greece. Tracked for up to two years, their positions are recorded every 12 hours via GPS, which allows to improve understanding of waste pathways, informing targeted cleanup efforts. A key advantage is the compact and durable GPS device (4-8 cm, 80-140 g) with a long-lasting battery (5 years on a single charge), and the waterproof (IP67) device is designed to remain oriented correctly in the water.
