A few words about the SMILO Demo Site
Porquerolles, a key REMEDIES Demo Site in the Port-Cros National Park, combines sustainable tourism with innovative environmental solutions. Tourism is its main economic activity, but seasonal surges strain local resources, making sustainable management essential.
REMEDIES Program at Porquerolles:
- Key Inputs: Water fountains, biowaste management, single-use plastic elimination, and micro-industries producing sustainable alternatives (e.g., giant reed products).
- Key Outputs: 60% reduction in single-use plastics, 20,000 kg of plastic saved annually, zero-waste solutions in shops, and visitor caps at 6,000 per day.
SMILO’s Role:
The SMILO Island Committee unites local stakeholders to drive sustainable innovations, focusing on waste reduction and eco-friendly practices. Through REMEDIES, Porquerolles deploys technologies that enhance its standing as a zero-waste destination.
By balancing tourism with conservation, Porquerolles showcases how innovation and community-driven governance can protect biodiversity and foster sustainable development.
