Co-organized by UM, CLERA, NIC, and INFOR
The REMEDIES Anti-Litter Campaign in Slovenia, led by the University of Maribor and co-organized by CLERA, NIC, and INFOR, will run from March to May 2026. The campaign brings together monitoring, data generation, technology demonstration, and prevention of plastic pollution at source. It engages local institutions, stakeholders, and the interested public in understanding how plastic litter enters the marine environment, and how it can be addressed using practical, science-based solutions.
A central milestone of the campaign is the REMEDIES Open Day at Marina Izola on 18 March 2026, which will mark the campaign launch and serve as a focal point for knowledge exchange, technology demonstration, and community engagement.
Campaign Objectives
The Slovenia Anti-Litter Campaign contributes to REMEDIES objectives by:
- Supporting systematic monitoring of marine and coastal plastic litter at the demo site.
- Demonstrating innovative technologies for marine litter detection and microplastic prevention.
- Raising awareness of pollution pathways such as wastewater from marina activities.
- Strengthening cooperation between research, industry, local authorities, NGOs, and citizens.
- Connecting local activities to EU-level marine litter data frameworks and mission goals.
Who Is the Campaign For?
The campaign addresses a broad but clearly defined audience, including:
- Local municipalities and coastal authorities involved in marine and wastewater management
- NGOs, civil society organisations, and environmental initiatives
- Marina operators, tourism actors, and coastal businesses
- Researchers, students, and technology developers in marine and environmental fields
- Citizens interested in practical environmental action and evidence-based solutions
Key Campaign Activities
REMEDIES Open Day – Marina Izola (18 March 2026)
The Open Day officially launches the campaign and presents the Slovenian REMEDIES pilot activities. Organised with Marina Izola, CLERA, INFOR, NIC, Science and Research center Koper, You(r)Sea institute, and other local stakeholders, the event includes:
- An in-person REMEDIES seminar on plastic identification and marine litter science
- Presentations of pilot activities at the Koper demo site
- Live demonstrations and guided on-site visit of REMEDIES technologies in the marina
Technology Demonstrations at the Demo Site
During the campaign, two REMEDIES technologies will be demonstrated and documented at Marina Izola:
- Underwater drone monitoring, used to map the seafloor and identify large plastic litter items, supporting systematic marine litter assessment. Discover more, here.
- A pilot microplastic filtration system, installed to treat wastewater generated during boat washing and antifouling paint rinsing, preventing microplastics from entering the sea. Discover more, here.
PLASTIC FANTASTIC Seminar: Slovenia Edition
The campaign will also feature the PLASTIC FANTASTIC Seminar, hosted by the University of Maribor on March 18th, 2026, in person. This webinar is a space for citizens, stakeholders, and decision-makers to exchange practical knowledge and accelerate the shift toward sustainable coastal management.
Preregistration is required via the online form, here.
